Asheboro Public Library children's programs

Come "Catch the Reading Bug" with us at the Asheboro Public Library this summer.We have film programs, storytimes and schoolage programs each week through the first week in August. All our programs are free and open to the public. There are also some special events throughout the summer. Didgeridoo Down Under will be here on June 17th at 7:oo p.m. You can hear some didgeridoos being played and learn about Australia. Ronald McDonald will visit us on July 9th with his "Book Time with Ronald McDonald" program. Mark Daniel, "Magical Storyteller"will amaze us with his Catch the Reading Bug program on August 6th at 1:30 p.m. This program will take place at Asheboro Friends Meeting Fellowship Hall. The church is located at the corner of Main and Kivett streets in Asheboro.

Babana Split Finale

We created a giant banana split as our finale for the summer reading program. The children were also treated to a great movie. We thank the Asheboro Friends Meeting for the use of their facilities for our program.

Warren Edwards, NASA educator, presented some great information about the Space Shuttle

program to our kids on July 24th.

Asheboro resident Tim Womick visited the library on July 18th. He calls himself a modern Johnny Appleseed. Tim shared an energetic and informative program about the benefits of trees. Our kids had a great time!

Southwest High School Drama Club

Everyone enjoyed the Who Dunnit presented by the Southwest High School Drama Club on July 12th. Volunteers from the audience bacame part of a human machine at the end of the program.

Breakfast With Santa and Kimberly

A good time was had by all at the Asheboro Public Library on Saturday Nov. 18, 2006. The children visited with children's book author Kimberly Johnson and Santa after breakfast. This event was sponsored by the Friends of the Randolph Public Library and Hospice of Randolph. Many thanks to Chick-Fil-A for providing breakfast.

The Children's Room has more new boks from the On My Own series. In On My Own Science ,we have The Flyer Flew:The Invention of the Airplane about the Wright Brothers. We learn about their love of new inventions. One of the inventions they wanted to learn more about was the glider. The brothers read about flight and experimented with small gliders. After building bigger gliders and finding out about how to control them, they were ready to attempt flight.

In Packed With Poison!:Deadly Animal Defenses, we learn about various animals which use poison to defend themselves and/or to capture prey. From rattlesnakes and king cobras to the duckbilled platypus and various ocean animals we see how venom is used and how dangerous it can be to humans. This is another great selection from the On My Own Science series.

We have two books from the On My Own History series. The first is Washington Is Burning. In this story we learn about the burning of Washington D.C. during the War of 1812. We see this story through the eyes of a fifteen-year old slave named Paul Jennings. Paul belonged to the family of President Madison. We see the bravery of Mrs. Madison as she carries away important papers, silverware and a picture of George Washington as she leaves the city.

In Sam Collier and the Founding of Jamestown we learn about the everyday life of a settler in the colony of Jamestown. We see the hardships and the dangers faced by the men and boys who were the first colonists. Sam was one of only 38 original settlers who survived. Many had died of disease or starvation before a ship returned with supplies from England. Sam showed the kind of determination that was necessary to survive in the New World.

The Children's Room has some exciting new books recently added to our collection. Younguncle Comes to Town by Vandana Singh is set in India. Younguncle has come to town to live with his older brother and his family. Soon it seems to Sarita, Ravi and the baby that Younguncle has always lived with them. Within one month Younguncle knows everyone in the village. By the time he has lived there four months, he has had three jobs. He flits from job to job making many friends and learning new things. Younguncle always has marvelous adventures along the way. You don't want to miss getting to know Younguncle!

Juneteenth by Vaunda Nelson and Drew Nelson is a part of the On My Own- Holidays series. This book tells the story of how the slaves of Galveston, Texas learned about their freedom after the Civil War. On June 19th 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to read an order from Abraham Lincoln that freed the slaves. One year later the former slaves celebrated their freedom. The day was marked with parades, ceremonies,worship services and the singing of songs and the telling of stories. Today, Juneteenth is celebrated all over the United States in much the same way as it was in 1866. Although it is a day of fun, games, and celebrations, everyone remembers that the reason behind the holiday is to celebrate the end of slavery in our country.

Passover by Cathy Goldberg Fisher from the On My Own - Holidays series, tells the story of how God rescued the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. The ten plagues sent by God to the Egyptians are described. Each year, Passover is celebrated by Jewish people all over the world to remember God's deliverance of His people. Fishman describes the tradition of the seder which takes place on the first night of Passover.
