The Children's Room has some exciting new books recently added to our collection. Younguncle Comes to Town by Vandana Singh is set in India. Younguncle has come to town to live with his older brother and his family. Soon it seems to Sarita, Ravi and the baby that Younguncle has always lived with them. Within one month Younguncle knows everyone in the village. By the time he has lived there four months, he has had three jobs. He flits from job to job making many friends and learning new things. Juneteenth by Vaunda Nelson and Drew Nelson is a part of the On My Own- Holidays series. This book tells the story of how the slaves of Galveston, Texas learned about their freedom after the Civil War. On June 19th 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to read an order from Abraham Lincoln that freed the slaves. One year later the former slaves celebrated their freedom. The day was marked with parades, ceremonies,worship services and the singing of songs and the telling of stories. Today, Juneteenth is celebrated all over the United States in much the same way as it was in 1866. Although it is a day of fun, games, and celebrations, everyone remembers that the reason behind the holiday is to celebrate the end of slavery in our country.
Passover by Cathy Goldberg Fisher from the On My Own - Holidays series, tells the story of how God rescued the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. The ten plagues sent by God to the Egyptians are described. Each year, Passover is celebrated by Jewish people all over the world to remember God's deliverance of His people. Fishman describes the tradition of the seder which takes place on the first night of Passover.
